FDA Approves Blood Test for Colorectal Cancer Screening for Adults in the US

Written by Dr. Kesler Dalmacy

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a groundbreaking new blood test for colorectal cancer screening among adults aged 45 and older who are at average risk for the disease. Developed by Guardant Health, a biotechnology company based in Palo Alto, California, this is the first blood test to receive FDA approval as a primary screening option for colorectal cancer and the first such test to meet Medicare reimbursement requirements.

In the United States, colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths, with over 53,000 people expected to die from the disease this year, according to the American Cancer Society. However, about 70% of these deaths can be prevented with increased screening.

The new test, called Shield, is expected to launch commercially within the next week. It will join other colorectal cancer screening methods such as colonoscopies and at-home stool tests. A simple blood test may be more convenient for some patients who find colonoscopies invasive or at-home stool tests awkward. The test, which has an accuracy rate for colon cancer detection similar to stool tests used for early detection of cancer, could offer an alternative for patients who may otherwise decline current screening options.

Current Screening Options

For people at average risk of colorectal cancer, current screening options include:

  • Stool-based tests, done either annually or every three years.
  • Traditional colonoscopy every 10 years.
  • Virtual colonoscopy every five years.
  • Sigmoidoscopy, which involves using an endoscope to examine the lower part of the colon, every five years.

Despite these options, it is estimated that more than one in three adults, aged 50 to 75, are not getting screened as recommended.

The FDA’s approval of the Shield blood test marks a tremendous leap forward, offering a compelling new solution to the less appealing screening methods currently available. The Shield blood test is more tolerable and accessible. It is our hope that you will consider discussing this new screening option with your healthcare provider. Stay informed, stay proactive, and well.
